Paarvai is a celebration of tamil literature. Together with the Tamil Language and Learning Promotion Committee, we held our event on the first day of the Tamil Language Festival. Through this event, we hope to promote Tamil Language and Literature to the youths through the use of technology. Every year, we focus on a Tamil Literature that is very meaningful to our teenagers. Likewise, this year, we selected Puranaanooru, a compilation of 400 Tamil poems written during the Sangam Times.

 

Hoping to effectively convey some of the meaningful messages from this text, we had a 3 part drama overarching the whole show. In between parts, we had an intense arena debate to argue about whether one of the Puranaanooru poems is applicable to today’s society. We also had a social experimental video competition for all Junior College, Polytechnic and ITE students. Through these videos, the students were able to help us understand what is the perspective that people today hold about the message conveyed by one of the poems from Purananooru.

 

This was followed by a segment where Kahoot was played with the audience. Kahoot is an audience participatory game where people compete to answer the question flashed on the screen as quickly as possible. Many interesting questions were asked about the content covered with regards to Purananooru in our Paarvai 2018 show. Through this, the audience managed to answer the questions together and those who gave the fastest and most accurate answers managed to win the competition. This event was graced by Dr S P Thinnappan, a reputable Tamil expert in Singapore who has played a critical role in the progress of Tamil in asian countries.
